What does ‘adaptability’ mean?
When we think of ‘Adaptability’, what immediately comes to mind is the human heart. Gosh our hearts are strong, aren’t they? We’re sure for most of us, if someone asked expansively, ‘What is a story from your life that displays your heart’s strength?’ it would inextricably be entwined with being adaptable. So, how do we define it? Most people will have their own personal definition of it, but ours would go something like this…
Being adaptable in today’s world includes character traits like resilience, knowing how to feel and process emotions (EQ) and particularly the beautiful feel the fear and do it anyway concept. This is when we want to feel a sublime sense of ‘I am truly alive in the present moment’ and to step into self-actualization. We rise to meet the challenge and that sense of accomplishing something that was difficult or a hardship to overcome is just indescribably rich. Subconsciously, we all seek this to some degree, it is hardwired into our DNA and links to our survival as a species.
Being open to change
Flexibility and agreeableness are likeable, and relieving the pressure of achieving a certain outcome opens the doors to ourselves and others even more. If you are quite the lover of control, that’s okay, (many of us are!) however, it can manifest into feelings of unworthiness, insecurity and uncertainty when things don’t go to plan. A loose grip on life is a good grip on life. If you can pivot, be multi-skilled and have an open attitude at work, it will push you streaks ahead!
Tips for being open to change:
Start small.
Starting small often dominoes and before you know it you’re fired up about new changes you’ve made! Walk to a different café for coffee. Drive a different route to work. Change the questions that you ask your spouse when they arrive home.
Write a list.
Write what changes you would like to see in your life and work and add in the WHY. The why is crucial to taking action to make the change and will open up your understanding of your inner dialogue and modus operandi, fueling your motivation.
Drop your identity.
Have you created your identity on foundations that you’re attached to but don’t resonate with anymore? Remember, you don’t owe anyone an image to uphold or a label to wear. Liberate yourself from expectations and do a one-eighty if that’s what is calling you!
